Problem-Based Learning Book Series

Publication Design

When I was initially given this project I was told it would be a series, so a design needed to be created where the covers stood out from each other while still being cohesive. In order to do so, I assigned each topic a color: green for life science, blue for Earth and space science, and red for physical science. This allowed me to create a background image focusing on those colors that contained elements that represented each topic. I wanted the imagery on the cover to be very dynamic, but the title needed to stand out from the busyness of the background. I created silhouettes for each book that were a basic representation of each topic, a leaf for life science, a circle with two rings for earth and space science, and a circuit for physical science. With the white silhouettes the title and authors of each book stand out while connecting to the imagery in the background.

I designed all the cover jackets and interior design elements.

Problem-Based Learning in the Life Science Classroom

1st Place Winner for Typographic Cover/Jacket in the Washington Publishers 2016 Design Awards

This is the first book in the Problem-Based Leaning series. It discusses the different topics of life science including life cycles, ecology, genetics, and cellular metabolism. The concept behind the cover of this book was to convey the aspects of life and its building blocks, showing a magnified image of a plant leaf, molecules, and DNA. A silhouette of a leaf was used as a basic representation of life science.

Problem-Based Learning in the Earth and Space Science Classroom

2nd place winner for typographic jacket/cover in the washington publishers 2017 design awards

This is the second book in the Problem-Based Leaning series. It discusses the different topics of Earth and space science including Earth’s landforms and water, the rock cycle and plate tectonics, weather, and astronomy. The concept behind the cover of this book was to convey the sense of the unknown wonder and vastness of space, but having the focal point of the Earth and the known. A silhouette of a circle with two rings was used as a basic representation of the planets in Earth and Space science.

Problem-Based Learning in the Physical Science Classroom

This book is the third in the Problem-Based Learning series. It discusses the different topics of physical science such as force, motion, speed, energy, circuitry, and magnets. I tried to create a sense of movement in the cover to convey the motion and energy of physical science with the the lightning elements, the magnet and iron filaments, and the lines of the circuit board. A silhouette of circuitry is used as a basic representation of physical science.
