Big Data Small Devices
The idea behind the design of this cover is to showcase the integration of mobile technology, such as phones and tablets, with different areas of Earth science discussed in the book. The different areas include the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and seasons.In order to showcase this the cover is shaped like a tablet with little details such as the home button and a battery indicator, while the screen has groupings of “apps” that represent these different topics on Earth science. With the interior of this book, each chapter is represented by an icon that encompasses the topic.
Reading Nature
With this cover I decided to take a more illustrative approach. The illustrations depict various images that represent nature and science. My goal with the design was to evoke the chalkboard drawing feeling to tie in the classroom. I chose to keep the illustrations white, allowing the title, subtitle, and the authors to stand out against the dark background. The illustrations are dynamic enough to standout while being all the same color.
In the interior I carried the illustrative elements throughout the design.
